The queen of the islands

Tahiti: city life, lagoons and wild valleys

Tahiti is much more than a gateway to the other islands. From Papeete and the west coast beaches to the mountainous interior and peninsula, it offers several journeys in one island.

An island with many sides to discover

In the northwest, Papeete brings together markets, shops, restaurants and much of the island's cultural life. Follow the west coast towards Punaauia and Paea, and the city gives way to beaches, gardens and sunsets over Moorea. To the east and inland, the vegetation becomes denser, waterfalls appear and the valleys reveal Tahiti's volcanic origins. Further afield, Tahiti Iti has a wilder feel.

Papeete: lively and convenient

Start at Papeete Market, then explore the waterfront and Paofai Gardens. In the evening, the roulottes — local food trucks — serve relaxed, welcoming meals. Papeete is particularly convenient for short stays, business trips and travellers who want to be close to the port and local services.

The west coast and its sunsets

Punaauia offers easy access to beaches and the lagoon, particularly around Vaiava Beach, often called PK18. You will also find Te Fare Iamanaha — the Museum of Tahiti and the Islands — and, in the surrounding area, important cultural sites such as the Ta’ata and Arahurahu marae.

Valleys, waterfalls and Tahiti Iti

Papenoo Valley, the east coast's black-sand beaches and the peninsula reveal another side of Tahiti. For inland excursions, challenging hikes or visits to isolated sites, choose a professional guide and check conditions before setting out.

A tip from our team

Hire a car if you want to explore the island properly. Distances and traffic can be surprising, while buses mainly operate during the day. Group your outings by coast and leave room for the unexpected: in Tahiti, a detour often leads to a beach, viewpoint or local spot you had not planned to visit.
